Steaming lobster is the way everyone here at Recipes-Lobster.com grew up cooking these tasty crustaceans. The great thing about steaming lobsters is it is almost impossible to over cook it's delicate meat. You will need a large pot that has a steamer insert and a tight lid in order to steam lobster properly. You can cook up to around 4 lobsters a large steam pot on a stove top, but if you plan to steam lobster for a larger group we suggest using FineLobster-120x240an outdoor propane burner. A deep fat turkey fryer setup works great for this. If your not able to use an outdoor burner then it's better to cook the lobsters in several smaller batches making sure to keep plenty of water at a rolling boil in the bottom of your steam pot at all times. This way you will ensure your steamed lobsters are done correctly. Do not over crowd the steam pot.

If you can't find or don't have a good source for lobster, you can buy Lobsters here. There is a variety if ingredients that may be added to the water prior to cooking your steamed lobster. There is no right or wrong ingredient. The following is only a possible suggestion for items to be added to the water prior to steaming lobsters. We suggest Salt, Old Bay Crab Boil, Peppercorns, Coarse Onion, Garlic, Bay Leaf, and Lemon. You do not and are not limited to using any of these suggestions. It is all personal taste. These ingredients will not over power, but only subtly flavor the lobster meat. However, the absolute one necessity, is Salt. This is so true that hard core lobster eaters will insist on using only seawater and occasionally fresh seaweed to cook their steamed lobster. There is reasoning why Salt must be used to steam lobster. Because Lobsters live in the ocean their meat naturally has a high salinity content. By steaming lobster in water with a lower salinity content, the salt within the lobster meat is drawn out through osmosis. Therefore the use of hot drawn salted butter is encouraged. You should use about 1 Tablespoon of Salt per quart of water in your steamer. You will not lower the boiling point of the water by adding this small amount of salt. It requires far more salt than a Tablespoon per quart to lower the boiling point 1 degree, even at Altitude.
